New York City Wages War On Cheats And Swindlers-Protects And Rewards Whistleblowers

The New York City False Claims Act [NYC FCA] protects and rewards NYC residents when they report fraud perpetrated against the city.

Largely modeled after the Federal False Claims Act-Qui Tam statutes, the law will help the City to recover damages from dishonest contractors, vendors and service providers who falsify records, invoices and billing.

Thousands of city contracts are awarded every year; construction, health care, social services, education, child welfare, corrections, and other city agencies rely heavily upon private contractors to provide goods and services to city residents. Given the massive amount of money involved, fraud is inevitable. Some predict the city will recover 30 million dollars a year on actions based upon the new law.

New York city residents now have a powerful tool to combat fraud in the NYC False Claims Act. If an individual has knowledge of fraud committed against the city, they now can retain private counsel to prosecute the case and receive up to 30% of any damages recovered.

The law also protects individuals against retaliation for reporting cheats and swindlers. Whistleblowers who report fraud cannot be fired, harassed, or negatively impacted because of their action.

The most important step for a successful false claims case is to choose a law firm with experience, knowledge, skill, and the resources to win. All cases require solid evidence of fraudulent activity to successfully prosecute and achieve substantial recovery. Comprehensive groundwork and a thorough investigation increases the likelihood your case will be successful. At Levy Phillips & Konigsberg, LLP we collect and investigate all evidence, documents, and potential witnesses in order to substantiate claims before filing.
