May 19, 2005 – Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed into law legislation today
authored by Council Member David Yassky (D-Brooklyn) to allow New York City
residents to sue businesses and individuals who defraud the City.

New York City Wages War On Cheats And Swindlers-Protects And Rewards Whistleblowers
The New York City False Claims Act [NYC FCA] protects and rewards NYC residents when they report fraud perpetrated against the city. Largely modeled after the Federal False Claims Act-Qui Tam statutes, the law will help the City to recover damages from dishonest contractors, vendors and service providers who falsify records, invoices and billing.
